What Your Website Actually Needs

A no-fluff guide to building a small business website that works.

Many small business websites look great but fail to convert, and the reason is often the same: they prioritize aesthetics over the customer journey. A beautiful website that confuses visitors isn't doing its job.

At Amari Creative, we always start with vision, then voice, before moving on to visuals. Think of it like building a home. You don't pick out paint colors before the foundation is poured. It’s always structure first, style second, and the same is true for websites.

Clarity & Strong First Impressions

Your homepage is your digital storefront. In a matter of seconds, a visitor decides whether to stay or leave, and that decision is almost entirely based on clarity. Can they tell within 5 seconds what you do, who you serve, and why you're the right choice for them.

A strong headline does the heavy lifting here. It should speak directly to your customer, not just describe your business. Pair that with a brand bio that's concise, specific, and customer-focused. This is not a paragraph about how passionate you are, but a clear statement of the value you deliver and who you deliver it to.

Mobile-Friendly Design

If you're not designing with mobile in mind, you're designing for the wrong screen. The majority of web traffic today comes from phones, which means most of your potential customers are experiencing your site on a 6-inch display. When you check mobile design, ask yourself: How does your homepage look? Are your buttons easy to tap? Does your text require zooming in?

On top of that, Google actively rewards mobile-friendly sites with higher search rankings and penalizes those that aren't. There’s nothing worse than working hard on our business and website only for it to get buried in search results!

Easy Navigation

Think about the last time you landed on a website and couldn't find what you were looking for. It’s frustrating, right? You probably left, and customers will too.

Navigation should be simple, intuitive, and predictable. Stick to clear and recognizable page labels: About, Services, Shop, Contact, and avoid clever naming that makes people think too hard. When it comes to calls-to-action, be intentional. Every button should lead somewhere logical. Ask yourself: if a customer clicks this, does the next page make sense? Put yourself in their shoes and walk through your own site like a first-time visitor.

Trust Signals

Before a customer buys from you, books with you, or even reaches out, they're vetting you. Your website needs to answer the question: Can I trust this business?

Trust signals are the details that prove you're legit. This means a phone number that someone will actually answer, an email address that gets a response, or a physical address if you have one. These small things matter more than most business owners realize.

Real customer reviews and testimonials go a long way too, because people trust people. If someone else had a great experience with you, let that be visible. And don't underestimate the power of photography! Quality product photos show customers exactly what they're getting, and brand photos of you and your team add a human element that builds connection and credibility.

SEO Basics

You can have the most well-designed website in the world, but if no one can find it, it's not working. SEO (search engine optimization) is how you show up when the right people are searching for what you offer.

Start with the basics: intentional keywords woven naturally into your copy, clear and descriptive page titles, and meta descriptions that accurately reflect each page's content. If you serve a specific area, local SEO is especially important, so make sure your location is referenced throughout your site and that your Google Business Profile is claimed and up to date.

SEO isn't a one-time task, but getting the fundamentals right from the start puts you miles ahead of competitors who skip this step entirely. To learn more about SEO basics, this blog post offers a deeper dive.
