SEO for Squarespace 101
A practical guide to choosing and using keywords so the right people can actually find you.
We’re all for a beautiful website (after all, that’s kind of our whole thing at Amari Creative!) There is nothing quite like landing on a gorgeous site with stunning photos, a cohesive color palette, fonts that just work, and copy that flows. But even the most stunning site falls flat if nobody can find it.
That's where SEO comes in, and more specifically, keywords.
Keywords are the words and phrases your customers are typing into Google when they're looking for exactly what you offer. When you choose the right ones and place them strategically throughout your site, you give search engines the context they need to connect you with the right people. Because at the end of the day, what's the point of a gorgeous website if it's sitting there invisible?
How to Choose the Right Keywords for Your Squarespace Site
Thankfully, Squarespace makes this easier than you might think. All Squarespace sites are built for clean indexing by search engines, which means you're already starting on solid ground. Even with that, your content and how you present it plays a big role in how well people can actually find you.
Here's how we approach it:
Start the old-fashioned way. Brainstorm a list of words and phrases related to your brand and industry. Think about how your ideal customer would describe what you do (not necessarily how you would describe it).
Leverage online tools. Once you have your starting list, it's time to go deeper. SEOSpace is a keyword research tool built specifically for Squarespace websites, making it a great option for small business owners who want actionable data without the overwhelm.
Don't overlook what's already working. Squarespace also has a built-in Search Keywords panel inside your Analytics dashboard that shows you what visitors are already searching for when they land on your site.
6 Places to Use Keywords on Your Squarespace Site
Once you have your keyword bank, it's time to put it to work! Here are the six most important places to use them on your site.
Your H1 Heading
Your H1 is the main heading on each page, and it's one of the strongest SEO signals you have. Think of it as the headline that tells Google exactly what the page is about. Use one H1 per page, and make sure your primary keyword is in it.
Your Page Copy
Google pays close attention to the first 100 words of any page, so your primary keyword should appear early, ideally in the first sentence or two. From there, aim to weave it in naturally three to four more times throughout the page. The keyword here is naturally; keyword stuffing does more harm than good.
Your Site Title
Your site title appears in search results and is one of the first things people see. Keep it under 60 characters and include at least one keyword so it's clear, searchable, and relevant.
Your Site Description
Your SEO site description represents your homepage in search results. It should be short (50 to 300 characters), readable, and written in plain language that describes what your site is about. Think of it as your elevator pitch to Google.
Your Individual Page SEO Descriptions
Every page on your site should have its own unique SEO description, including your home page, about page, product pages, event pages—all of it! Keep each one between 50 and 300 characters and make sure it accurately reflects the content on that specific page.
Your Page URLs
Clean, keyword-rich URLs help both search engines and real humans understand what a page is about at a glance. When setting up your pages in Squarespace, keep URLs short, lowercase, and descriptive.
SEO Doesn't Have to Be Overwhelming
SEO might seem intimidating at first, but once you understand the basics, it's more approachable than you think, and the payoff is so worth it! Your future customers are out there right now searching for exactly what you offer. When you use the right keywords in the right places, you're not just checking a box; you're actively helping the right people find you.
At Amari, we build websites that are as strategic as they are beautiful. That means on-brand, keyword-rich copy that sounds like you, connects with your audience, and gets you found on Google and other search engines.
