4 Common Website Mistakes We See Small Businesses Make (and How to Fix Them)

Is your website helping your business grow? Or quietly getting in the way?

Your website is your first impression. It’s basically your digital storefront! When done correctly, it feels like a warm welcome the moment someone lands on it. It builds trust, drives conversions, and communicates exactly what makes your business special.

When it’s not quite hitting the mark, however, it can do the opposite. It can confuse visitors, frustrate them, and worst of all, send them straight to a competitor.

You've worked too hard to build your business to let your website be the thing that holds you back.

These mistakes are common, which means you're definitely not alone. And even better, they're totally fixable. We're going to walk you through the four most common website mistakes we see small businesses make, and give you the exact steps to turn things around. Let's get into it!

1. Unclear Messaging

One of the most common things we see is websites with messaging that's either too vague or way too wordy. Businesses often struggle to clearly communicate who they are, what they do, and who they serve, and that information needs to be crystal clear and front and center. If a visitor can't figure out what you do within about five seconds, they’ll leave. You only get one shot at that first impression, so make it count!

The Fix: Near the top of your homepage, include a concise statement (we call it a brand bio) that clearly articulates what you do, who you do it for, and why. Alongside that, make sure you have a strong value proposition and a simple overview of your products or services. Keep your copy easy to scan because people don't read every single word. Clarity builds trust, and trust is what drives people to take action (aka invest in your brand!)

2. A Poor Mobile Experience

If your site isn't optimized for mobile, you're leaving a lot on the table. Globally, mobile devices account for approximately 63% of web traffic, while desktop make up just 37%. On top of that, search engines like Google prioritize mobile-friendly sites in their rankings. Ignoring the mobile experience means missing out on a huge chunk of your potential audience.

The Fix: Always preview your site on a mobile device to make sure the experience feels smooth and seamless. Use a responsive site design, which automatically adjusts your layout for different screen sizes. One of the reasons we design on Squarespace is that their templates are designed to be responsive by default. Make sure your text is easy to read, your buttons are easy to tap, and your overall site is a joy to navigate on a small screen.

3. Ignoring SEO

In 2026, ignoring SEO is simply not an option if you want your business to grow online, and yet, it's one of the most commonly overlooked pieces of the puzzle.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is what helps your site show up on search engines and AI-powered search tools. Even the most stunning, beautifully designed website falls completely flat if nobody can find it.

The Fix: Start by identifying relevant keywords (the terms and phrases your audience is actually searching for) and use them strategically throughout your site. Optimize your meta tags, headers, and on-page copy, and don't underestimate the power of a good blog. Publishing quality content consistently is one of the best ways to drive organic traffic over time. If you want to learn more, check out our post on SEO for Squarespace 101 for a deeper dive.

4. Slow Load Times

This one might surprise you with how big of an impact it has. If your site takes longer than three seconds to load, most users will leave before they even see your content, and that costs you real traffic and real sales. Harsh, we know! But honestly, you'd probably leave too.

The Fix: Compress large images and files before uploading them to your site. Enable caching and minimize heavy scripts that slow things down. Make sure you're using a reliable hosting provider with fast servers, and be sure to audit your current performance using Google PageSpeed Insights, a free tool that tells you exactly where your site is lagging and how to fix it.
