Tips for Service-Based Entrepreneurs to Find New Clients
How to Get More Clients as a Service-Based Business Owner: Client Attraction Strategies That Actually Work
For service-based businesses, one of the biggest parts of keeping things running is constantly being on the lookout for new clients. Even if you've been in business for years, that never really changes. But it's especially important for new entrepreneurs who are still building up their client roster.
One question we get asked frequently is "How do you find clients?" What works for us might not work for everyone, but we wanted to share some of the strategies that helped us when we were just starting, along with a few that are still effective for us today!
Ideally, inquiries are constantly rolling in. People are finding you easily, connecting with your brand and website, and booking your services without hesitation. One day you'll get there, but it takes time and effort. Even the most seasoned entrepreneurs go through slower seasons. Finding clients isn't a one-time task. It's an ongoing effort, and building a real client acquisition strategy is worth the work.
7 Client Attraction Strategies for Service-Based Entrepreneurs
1. Leverage your network. Former coworkers, friends, family members, volunteer groups, or social organizations you belong to are all part of your network. Put it out there that you're open for work. Spread the word about your business. It can feel scary and vulnerable to ask, but it works.
2. Show up at local events and network in person. Get in front of people face to face. People trust people more than they trust brands. When someone gets to know you and what you offer, it builds trust and credibility, and they're far more likely to remember you when they need your services.
3. Reach out to your email list. Dust off that list and show up in their inbox. Let them know you have availability, remind them what you do, offer a discount, or send them something of value. A warm list is one of the most underused tools in your marketing toolkit.
4. Reconnect with past clients. If you have a roster of happy clients you've worked with before, check in on them. Before jumping straight into a pitch, ask how they're doing. Let them know about any new services or ways you can support them further. Past clients already know exactly what it's like to work with you, so the know, like, and trust factor is already built in.
5. Ask for referrals and offer an incentive. The best way to drum up new business is to show, not tell. A solid bank of testimonials and referrals from happy clients goes a long way toward attracting new clients and helping them decide to work with you.
6. Strengthen your marketing efforts. Show up consistently on social media. This tells prospective clients you're active, available, and staying relevant. When your face and your brand stay top of mind, people are far more likely to think of you the moment they're ready to book.
7. Keep going, even in the slow seasons. Client acquisition isn't a one-and-done task. It's a habit you build over time, and consistency is what separates entrepreneurs who grow steadily from those who stall out.
Your Work Will Eventually Speak for Itself
Eventually, your work will speak for itself. You'll stop searching and might even build a waitlist of clients who found you because of the great work you've put out into the world. But until then, or when those inevitable slow seasons roll around, come back to this list and give it a try. Things can change quickly in a service-based business, so don't lose hope.
